DOE giving $575 million in carbon capture grants

WASHINGTON - The Energy Department said Tuesday it was awarding $575 million for carbon capture research-and-development projects in 15 states. The experimental technique involves storing carbon dioxide emissions from coal plants and other sources underground, in an attempt to reduce pollution blamed for contributing to global warming. "This is a major step forward in the fight to reduce carbon emissions from industrial plants," said Energy Secretary Steven Chu. "These new technologies will not only help fight climate change, they will create jobs now and help position the United States to lead the world in clean coal technologies, which will only...

Dick Kelly, CEO of Xcel Energy Inc., is irked that Congress hasn't raised his taxes. "We need a price on carbon," said Kelly, who runs a multistate utility in the vanguard of next-generation efficiency and cleaner-energy programs. Kelly, Duke Power CEO Jim Rogers and other utility executives have been expecting Congress to pass cap-and-trade legislation, which would effectively place a tax on carbon emissions.

"...large climate shift" on Jupiter
Posted by admin / Under Carbon Nanotube Chemistry
Storms on Jupiter For more than 300 years, Jupiters gaseous atmosphere has hosted a gigantic storm known has the Giant Red Spot. Then in 2006, another red storm appeared and produced what appeared to be a few other whitish storm spots. When Hubble snapped this image in 2008, astronomers were surprised to discover that a third red storm spot had appeared. They speculate that this storm outbreak is due to a large climate shift on Jupiter . What's being sucked up into these storms or what causes them is still unknown.

New Controversy: Financial Reform Bill Contains Quotas For Minority Hiring On Wall Street Joe Weisenthal | Jul. 28, 2010, 5:27 AM This is always how it goes with big bills. Politicians and the media focus on a few big issues (prop trading, the Consumer Financial Protection Agency, etc.) while small, but controversial measures, get slipped in the back door, and then become the subject of fascination several days after the bill has passed. It happened with healthcare, after people suddenly realized there was a provision to go after fast food. And now with the Dodd-Frank Act, according to POLITICO, there's...

Theres a sucker born every minute

Transiting through SFO the other day, I noticed a number of kiosks where one can purchase carbon offsets for ones flight. To feel good if you are crossing the country costs @ $12.00, or 30x the actual going rate. To feel good for a Transpac flight might cost as much as $20. Somehow, I think Al Gore is lurking somewhere in the background. Of course, that nasty carbon will probably just blow right back across the Pacific from China in a couple of days.

A new Government Accountability Office (GAO) report released today found that carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) schemes favored by Democrats under their proposed cap and trade national energy tax boondoggle would increase electricity costs, reduce electricity output and increase water consumption. Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), ranking Republican of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, and Sen. George Voinovich (R-Ohio), released the GAO today covering the status, cost, and reliability of current CCS technology for coal-fired power plants. The release states, Based on GAO's survey of stakeholders, including utilities and state regulators, current CCS technology would increase electricity costs...

Prices rise as New Zealand passes emissions trading scheme
Posted by admin / Under Carbon Nanotube Chemistry
Petrol and power prices have risen sharply in New Zealand after the government introduced a controversial emissions trading scheme. The government has pressed ahead with plans to slash the nation's carbon output, despite widespread opposition and New Zealand's larger neighbour Australia shelving its own scheme. Motorists were hit by a 3c (1.4p) rise in the price of a litre of petrol overnight, while householders face a 5 per cent increase in gas and electricity prices. It was the first step in a complex scheme, universally referred to as "the ETS", to slash carbon emissions back to 1990 levels. Some disgruntled...
